il castello all'ingresso

At present, it is a top-level hotel, but it was a farm until some years ago. Before the year 1000, it was “Curtis Regia” then it became a castle and it was attacked and devastated(1234) by the troops of Orvieto which were at war against Siena. Afterwards, it was transformed into a fortified villa by the marchesi Chigi from Siena, with the parish-church annexed (Saint Bartolomeo in Leonina). Already since the XIII century, there was here a chapel of the chapter of the Cathedral of Siena, rebuilt and erected in parish-church towards the XVII century. It is situated on a pleasant small hill, covered with tuff, at the base of which two gullies flow on the right and on the left, flowing together into the near stream Biena. Its geographical connotation is connoted by the Via Lauretana Antica which, linking Siena to Asciano, pass along the foot of the hill. The surrounding landscape is one of the most suggestive of the southern Tuscany.
