Ancient fortress turned into two villas of the sienese families Piccolomini and Cinughi. Since ancient times Torre a Castello has given the title to a parish(Santa Maria) in the territory of San Vito in Vensuris. It is on a tuff hill between Mount Baroni and the superhighway Siena-Val di Chiana. It was a signory of the counts of the Scialenga who gave it, together with other castles to the commune of Siena in 1175. The castle was attacked and destroyed by the Florentines in 1234. After the battle of Monteaperti it was given to the people of Torre a Castello its jurisdiction. Being part of one of the Scialenga’s communes, it was joined together with the community of Asciano after the economic regulation of the 9th December 1777.
