Fortified town, disputed for a long time between the Florentines and the Sienese, it fell under the domain of the Florentines in the middle of the 1300, when its economic power was at its maximum. The town is also famous, because in 1240, Arnolfo di Cambio was born there. The main square of the town is dedicated to him. Although there have been several important archeological findings, dating as far back as the IV millenium B.C., the first records attesting the presence of Colle di Val d’Elsa, date back to the X century, but only later on, the town gained its own identity. Anyway, several findings testify the Etruscan origin of this area, as the necropolis of Dometaia and that of Le Ville do. The history and the identity of Colle Val d’Elsa, rise and develop together with other centers of the Valdelsa, under ecclesiastical and civil lordships. We must not forget that this area was crossed by the Via Francigena that brought a considerable traffic of goods and men, and therefore a secure income.
