La facciata in travertino bianco del Duomo

The story of Pienza, as opposed to that of common neighbors, it is characterized by long periods of medieval history and wars. The town was in fact nothing more than a small village until 1462, known as Corsignano. The event that changed the fate of Pienza was the birth in 1405 of Enea Silvio Piccolomini that 53 years later became Pope Pius II. Just a trip to the pontiff Mantua led him to cross the place of birth and found that the degradation led him to decide to build on the old village: construction which lasted about four years, and brought to light a town harmonious and typically forms fifteenth . The premature death of Pope Pius II closed the history of the town that has remained almost unchanged.
Pienza is among the city decorated the Military Valor for the Liberation War because it was awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valor to the sacrifices of its people and its assets in the partisan struggle during the Second World War.
For the beauty of its historic centre renaissance in 1996 Pienza joined the World Heritage natural, artistic, cultural UNESCO, followed in 2004 by the same area where valliva arises: Val d'Orcia.
