San Florenzo a Vescona

ASCIANO

This church, located on a steep hill and connected to the village of Vescona by a cypress-lined path, is a replacement for the Diocese of Pievina and is located on the edge of the ancient Lauretana road.

History of the original church dates back to 1025, through a document in which the "Count Guinigi della Scialenga and della Berardenga" granted, "in benefice" to the Monastery of San Salvatore della Berardenga, a house with a vegetable garden, a vineyard, and a plot of land located near their castle in Vescona.

We do not know the exact period of the current building, which was certainly rebuilt after yet another landslide on the hill on which it stands. The hill has been consolidated several times in recent times due to its instability in the event of torrential rains.

We do know, however, that the parish of San Florenzio in Vescona had 156 inhabitants in 1833, a population that outnumbered that of its baptismal church of San Giovanni in Vescona, which at the time had 134 inhabitants.

Perhaps this is why, despite frequent damage from landslides, the church has never been abandoned.
