The first written mention of the church in 714 and 715 will have on documents relating to the dispute between the bishops of Siena and Arezzo, for the possession of churches and monasteries on the border between the two dioceses, which is cited under the name: Sancte Mater Ecclesia in Paua.
In 2001, following the suggestions of these documents as well as research carried out on the surface of the municipality, has been identified the location of the parish church of San Pietro in Pava. The first campaign of excavations was carried out in 2004 and following subsequent campaigns, the church of medieval origin, is slowly emerging-It is a complex, for which dates back to early Christian phase, rare to find in Italy.
On the whole Church, starting from the tenth century, it adds a vast cemetery used until the early thirteenth century.
