Santo Stefano

MONTERONI D'ARBIA

 LISTEN THE AUDIO GUIDE

The church of Santo Stefano is in Sovignano, in the commune of Monteroni d’Arbia. Mentioned since the end of the XIII century, it originally belonged to the parish of Murlo and it was dedicated to Santa Lucia. The passage to the title of Santo Stefano happened during the XVIII century after the restoration works made by Francesco Piccolomini and continued also in the following century by the same family which had the patronage over the church. With only one room and deprived of all its furnishings which were transferred after the alienation, the building keeps the vaulted corbel in stucco, which is the only proof of the transformation made during the XVIII century; in the external par aments there are traces of the Romanesque filaretto in stone ashlars.
