Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie

ASCIANO

The origin of the Sanctuary is traced back to an original roadside Tabernacle located on the road that led from Chiusure to the Abbey of Monte Oliveto.

Its construction is placed in the second half of the fifteenth century, confirmed by the attribution to the Sienese painter Pietro di Francesco Orioli (1458 - 1496) of the Madonna with child, frescoed inside.

The presence of the painter on site is testified by another work of him made inside the refectory of Monte Oliveto, also representing a Madonna and Child.

The evident devotion to this effigy led to the transformation, about a century later, from a Tabernacle to a votive chapel, thanks to the offerings of the inhabitants of Chiusure and pilgrims.

The lasting bond of the local population allowed both the expansion of the chapel and the construction of the portico in the eighteenth century.
