Pieve di Sant'Andreino alle Cave

RAPOLANO TERME

 LISTEN THE AUDIO GUIDE

The parish church of Sant'Andreino is a sacred building located in Le Cave in Serre di Rapolano.

The church is of Romanesque construction in travertine with a semicircular apse and portal with archivolt and frame carved with geometric motifs and cherubs. The date AD MCI is engraved on a stone in the apse, perhaps referable to the year of foundation.

After years of neglect, it has recently been restored.

It was originally dedicated to Sant'Andrea, then over time it took on the name of Sant'Andreino alle Cave, to distinguish it from the church that existed in the center of Sarre, with the same name, demolished in 1849 because it was unsafe.

Up until the second half of the 19th century, the only altar inside the church held the polyptych by Paolo di Giovanni Fei of the Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist, Andrew, Francis and the Prophet Daniel, now kept in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena.
