RAPOLANO TERME
The origins of Rapolano, at least in the present location, seem to date back to the construction of a border castle that shortly after the year one thousand, the Counts of Scialenga we had built to guard a strategic point at the northeast boundary of their territorial domain. In fact the castle was in defense of the pass that connects the valley dell'Ombrone Valdichiana and the language of the fold of the stream formed Foenna.
Looking at the town from above, clearly identify the original structure of the castle and its subsequent extension. Originally the castle had a structure wedge with the tip oriented to the east and only subsequently assumed a rhomboidal shape with the addition of manufactured wedge on the west side.
The whole castle was forever embedded in the blocks of the village, giving rise to the neighborhood now called Castellare. The only clear evidence of the original structure is the tower, last refuge of every defensive castle, whose remains are identified in a large tower of travertine blocks placed at the highest point of the country.
