SAN GIOVANNI D'ASSO

 LISTEN THE AUDIO GUIDE

In 1295, Simone dei Cacciaconti, master of Montisi, bequeathed to the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala his possessions in Montisi. In the following century, the Hospital builds , at the western limit of the village, a small fortress with a high embattled tower, used as “Grancia”, that is a building used to keep the products of the landed properties. In 1775 the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, orders the selling of the goods to the Hospital, including the Grancia of Montisi, which was bought in 1778 by Jacopo Mannucci Benincasa, reaching the family which still owns it. During the last World War, in June 1944, the beautiful tower of the Grancia was mined at its base and completely destroyed.
