Castle

Castel Verdelli

SAN GIOVANNI D'ASSO

 LISTEN THE AUDIO GUIDE

The castle is made up of two parts which probably date back to the same period, but structurally separated. The vast and high fourteenth-century-palace has been completely built in bricks with scarp base. On the south side, there are more recent buildings, probably of the XVI century, but heavily restructured in a following period. Strangely, of this castle we can’t find direct historic information. This perplexes us because its collocation is exactly at the road crossing from which begins the only road to reach the Medieval commune of Vergelle, where, according to some sources, the Renaissance painter called “Il Sodoma” was born. Then, the castle is not so far from the Parish of Pava, where some recent excavations have brought to the light the remains of Medieval buildings and the traces of the Roman age.The castle is made up of two parts which probably date back to the same period, but structurally separated.
