DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The work, owned by the Conservatory of San Carlo Borromeo, is currently on display in the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art in Pienza. Laura Martini attributes the work to the early work of Francesco Nasini, the prolific painter from Amiata, founder of the renowned family of artists. Stylistically, Francesco falls somewhere between "Mannerism" and "Naturalism": having trained in the school of the elderly Rutilio Manetti, he nevertheless remained closely attentive to the artistic movements of 16th-century Sienese art, from Sodoma to Beccafumi to Francesco Vanni. According to Laura Martini, the Pienza painting, in its typology of the sacred group, the soft impasto, and the concrete, naturalistic rendering of the saint in profile, is inspired by the style of Rutilio Manetti.
