Frank Adler è un single che sta allevando Mary, la nipote di sette anni figlia di sua sorella, una matematica assolutamente geniale. Anche Mary è straordinariamente dotata per la materia e non solo. Tanto che quando deve controvoglia andare a scuola si ritrova in una condizione distante anni luce da quella dei suoi coetanei. Ciò le procura disagio ma, ad aggravare la situazione, interviene la nonna materna Evelyn che la vuole sottrarre a Frank per spingerla sul versante dell’eccellenza negli studi.
