DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Oil paintings on wood with carved and gilded frames.
The coffin headpiece, along with the other two, depicting the Baptism of Christ and the Pietà, deposited in the Pienza Cathedral Museum by the Pienza bishop Giacomo Bellucci, were initially simply considered to be by the school of Sodoma.
On the occasion of the exhibition: Pienza and the Val d'Orcia, Bagnoli identified Rustico as the author of the paintings, based on typological and stylistic comparisons between the Pietà in the Pienza Museum and the one painted by Rustico in 1450, owned by Monte dei Paschi di Siena.
Similarities, Bagnoli still maintains, can be seen in the bird's-eye view of the Baptism of Christ, similar to the one that forms the backdrop to Rustico's mature masterpiece, formerly in Sant'Ansano a Dofana.
There is no information to date about the possible fourth head, present in similar biers.
