The basilica of Saint Agatha was founded in 1029 as a ‘pieve’, a parish church, when it acquired the font of an earlier church called Saint Hyppolitus. Its structure, unique to the Siena region, is built in the shape of a Latin cross with three apses, and it appears to be the adaptation of an earlier, simpler building. The church has the usual transept crossing, but the nave is elongated lengthwise creating two extra spaces. Looking up, you can see the cross vaulting above the apses, continuing until it meets the great arches of the transepts, and the hemispherical cupola that rises above them. While this part of the church, the presbytery area, is consistent in form and proportions, the Romanesque part of the building, the nave, is broad, and is punctuated by large windows with pointed Gothic arches. In fact the nave was restored in the mid 12th century, at the same time as the front of the church was decorated with three great blind arcades with pointed arches, and crowning all this, an upper pediment with another row of small pointed blind arches. The crenellated bell-tower, with its elegant rectangular shape, was also built in the 12th century and reworked in the 13th.
