ABBEY OF MONTE OLIVETO MAGGIORE

Founded in at the beginning of the XIV century from the blessed Bernardo Tolomei, in the place where he retired in hermitage previously, the imposing Benedictine-mass is situated in the southern area of the commune of Asciano, a green oasis at the edge of the “ Accona’s desert”, that is a place characterized by rough and steep calanques. The church, till today to visit, was built in the XV century together with the adjacent cloister, where catches the eye, because of its undoubted beauty and its excellent state of preservation, the cycle of Renaissance frescos, which represent Saint Benedict’ life, a work of Luca Signorelli and Antonio Bazzi da Vercelli, known as “Sodoma”. Of great interest is also the bibliographic collection, kept in the library of the attached monastery.
