DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

Tempera and gold on panel, 67 x 48 cm, attributed to Duccio di Buoninsegna.

Francesco Brogi (1862, ed. 1897) cites the panel as the centerpiece of a 17th-century canvas in the church of San Pietro e San Paolo in Buonconvento and attributes it to the manner of Segna di Buonaventura. The painting is later mentioned by Lusini (1912), and Van Marle (1924) considers it close to the style of the Master of Badia a Isola. Berenson (1932) and Bacci (1944) agree with the attribution to Segna. Garrison (1949) linked the work to the "Madonna of Castelfiorentino" and dated it between the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Bologna (1960) proposed the attribution to the young Duccio, an attribution taken up by Padovani in 1981, after a previous reference to the Master of Badia a Isola with a dating around 1290 ca, and recently by Guiducci (1993). Stubblebine (1979) also attributes it to the Master of Badia a Isola.
