San Cristoforo che traghetta Gesù Asciano
Current location: Sant'Agostino
Original location: Sant'Agostino
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Recent consolidation and restoration work has brought to light a series of 15th-16th-century frescoes in the church of Sant'Agostino. One of the best-preserved and easily restored is the fresco of Saint Christopher holding the baby Jesus, who in turn holds the world. This fresco, whose artist is unknown, is located in a strange position, on the left side of the rear façade, so much so that its presence often goes unnoticed. This presence, however, is particularly important, as it testifies to how the church of Sant'Agostino once represented an obligatory stop and a reliable spiritual reference for pilgrims traveling along the Via Lauretana.
