Porta Serraia vista dal cassero del castello

The village of Serre is perched on a hill behind a gate that opens in the valley of Sentino and Ombrone.

Since there is extracted from a travertine among the most valuable now quarries are partly decommissioned. After the battle of Benevento (1266), with the collapse of the Swabian power and the subsequent defeat of the party Ghibelline, Cacciaconti managed to sustain the Serre until 1269, after stettero on the defensive but in 1271-1272 were expelled from the castle, which fell under the rule of Siena. John Cacciaconti the last heir of the family, sold the Cassero of Serraia and other possessions to Siena merchant Giovanni de 'Rossi in 1373.
